Tuvimos el gusto de participar en «Pewén dirá la tierra», un documental sobre la Araucaria araucana —el pewén, árbol sagrado del pueblo mapuche-pewenche— producido por Duoc UC A Puertas Abiertas.
La Araucaria araucana es una especie longeva y emblemática de los bosques andino-patagónicos del sur de Chile y Argentina, hoy clasificada como En Peligro y amenazada por incendios, el cambio climático y el daño foliar. El documental recorre su valor ecológico y cultural, y la importancia de comprender y conservar este árbol y los ecosistemas que sostiene.
Nuestra colaboración se centró en identificar los patógenos fúngicos asociados al daño foliar. En conjunto con el equipo de investigación, recolectamos muestras en terreno, cultivamos los hongos en el laboratorio, secuenciamos tanto los hongos como las araucarias, y realizamos ensayos de inoculación para recapitular los signos y síntomas de la enfermedad y así establecer la causalidad del patógeno.

We were glad to take part in “Pewén dirá la tierra”, a documentary about the monkey-puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana) —the pewén, a sacred tree for the Mapuche-Pewenche people— produced by Duoc UC A Puertas Abiertas.
Araucaria araucana is a long-lived, emblematic conifer of the Andean-Patagonian forests of southern Chile and Argentina, now listed as Endangered and threatened by wildfire, climate change, and foliar damage. The film explores its ecological and cultural significance, and why understanding and conserving this tree —and the ecosystems it sustains— matters.
Our collaboration focused on identifying the fungal pathogens linked to the foliar damage. Together with the research team, we collected field samples, cultured the fungi in the lab, sequenced both the fungi and the Araucarias, and ran inoculation assays to recapitulate the disease signs and symptoms —establishing the pathogen’s causal role.
